The UN
Security Council has approved a 12-month renewal of the European stabilization
force's mandate in Bosnia
and Herzegovina.
The United Nations Security Council has extended the mandate of the EU's
stabilization force (EUFOR) in BiH by 12 months. The aim of EUFOR, which
succeeded NATO's stabilization force (SFOR) in December 2004, is to ensure
compliance in BiH with the terms of the 1995 Dayton peace agreement.
"Emphasizing that a comprehensive and coordinated return of refugees and
displaced persons throughout the region continues to be crucial to lasting
peace," the Council said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Security Council welcomed NATO's decision to continue to
maintain a presence in BiH in order to continue to assist in implementing the Dayton peace accord in
conjunction with EUFOR.
The Security Council reiterated that the BiH authorities are themselves
primarily responsible for the successful implementation of the peace agreement.
