Albania
has agreed to host more prisoners from Guantanamo, but it won't let in Chinese
Uighurs that could endanger its relationship with China.
Prime Minister Sali Berisha met with U.S. special envoy for Guantanamo Daniel
Fried on Wednesday to discuss the technical and legal aspects of hosting
persons held by the US in a prison at its Guantanamo military facility in Cuba.
Berisha
said Albania agreed to accept Guantanamo inmates, but the country could take no
more Uighurs - members of China's ethnic Uighur Muslim minority - considered by
China to be terrorists.
"Albania would not accept any more Chinese Uiughurs because it does not
want risk aggravating its good relations with China," Berisha said. No
details have been released as to the exact number of Guantanamo inmates to be
transferred to Albania.
Albania earlier accepted into its territory the relocation of five former
detainees of the Guantanamo prison. Tirana refused to hand them over to China,
sparking a row with Beijing.
