ICJ will not hand down any verdict for Kosovo, Slovenian President says Print E-mail
Monday, 14 December 2009

d_tirkSlovenian President Danilo Turk stated that he does not believe that International Court of Justice (ICJ) will pass final conclusions on legality on Kosovo’s declaration of independence because "it must take into consideration the rule that recognition of states is matter of sovereignty of those states who recognise."

- The court can analyse circumstances, which brought to proclamation of independence, can give its opinion for those circumstances but it cannot issue rules of recognition to states. It is a matter of sovereignty of each state separately. Too much should not be expected from advisory opinion of the Hague court, Turk said in the interview with Serbian daily Politika.

Turk, who is professor of international law, pointed out that the issue of one-sided secession is always disputable and connected with political tensions and in this sense dangerous for the peace in the world.
